For years, choosing Firebase meant trading away relational SQL joins, strict foreign keys, and pgvector similarity search in favor of NoSQL document denormalization. Following the announcement of **What's new in Firebase at Cloud Next 2025** by Kristen Richards, Andrea Wu on the [**Official Firebase Blog**](https://firebase.blog/posts/2025/04/cloud-next-announcements/) (2025-04-09), here is our hands-on CodingCat.dev breakdown of what actually shipped, how it works under the hood, and how we wire it into production TypeScript, Next.js, Astro, SvelteKit, React, and Angular applications. Update: As of May 2025, Vertex AI in Firebase has evolved into an offering named Firebase AI Logic to give developers more options for easily integrating generative AI models into their apps. Check out the documentation to learn more.

## The Mental Model: Why What's new in Firebase at Cloud Next 2025 Matters for Web Devs

As a Google Developer Expert (GDE) for Firebase and Senior Solutions Engineer at CodingCat.dev, I evaluate every Firebase update through one lens: does it reduce boilerplate while keeping our runtime security and cloud bills predictable? Firebase Data Connect bridges that gap by pairing a managed Google Cloud SQL for PostgreSQL instance with a declarative GraphQL schema compiler that automatically generates type-safe TypeScript, React, and Angular SDKs alongside server-enforced @auth directives.

> AJ Pro-Tip from Alex: Keep your authorization logic inside your Data Connect GraphQL operations using @auth(level: USER) and server-evaluated expressions like auth.uid and request.time rather than trusting client-supplied user IDs in query variables.

## How It Works: Technical Breakdown & Implementation

You can also head right to [**Firebase Studio**](https://studio.firebase.google.com/) to try it for yourself today!

### Introducing the App Testing agent

Testing your app before launch is crucial, but manual testing can be expensive and time-consuming while automated testing frameworks can be flaky and difficult to maintain. To improve your testing experience, Firebase is launching a preview of the [**App Testing agent**](https://firebase.google.com/docs/app-distribution/android/app-testing-agent), a Gemini-powered test case generation, management, and execution agent that works directly within [**App Distribution**](https://firebase.google.com/docs/app-distribution). You define test goals in natural language, and the agent will use AI to understand and navigate your app, simulate user interactions, and provide detailed test results.

The App Testing agent is designed to help you:

- automate and expand your functional and UI testing efforts
- make testing accessible to a wider range of team members without requiring code
- adapt to changes in your app so you spend less time fixing broken tests
- run tests simultaneously against various physical and virtual devices

To learn more and to see the App Testing agent in action, check out the [**blog post**](http://firebase.blog/posts/2025/04/app-testing-agent)!

### Expanded language support for Genkit

The Firebase team built Genkit, our open-source framework with built-in tooling and observability to help simplify developing intelligent features into your apps. Following the [**general availability launch of Genkit for Node.js**](https://firebase.blog/posts/2025/02/announcing-genkit/) in February, Firebase is expanding Genkit’s language support with Genkit for Python (Alpha) and Go (Beta).

These new SDKs bring Genkit’s powerful capabilities to even more developer ecosystems:

- [**Genkit for Python**](https://python.api.genkit.dev/) (Alpha) is ideal for experimentation and early development. The API may evolve rapidly as we incorporate your feedback, but all essential capabilities are available to start building today.
- [**Genkit for Go**](https://genkit.dev/go/docs/get-started-go) (Beta) has a richer feature set and increased reliability as it approaches production readiness.

Whether you’re using [**Node.js**](https://firebase.blog/posts/2025/02/announcing-genkit), Python, or Go, you can now leverage Genkit’s consistent tools and concepts to build sophisticated AI-powered features with robust primitives, integrated tooling, and an extensible plugin system that simplifies prototyping, building, and deploying AI workflows.

### More integrations for Vertex AI in Firebase

Vertex AI in Firebase lets you integrate generative AI into your applications by providing a streamlined, serverless, and secure SDK. Building on the support for Imagen models (Imagen 3 and Imagen 3 fast) we recently [**announced**](https://firebase.blog/posts/2025/03/imagen3-support-on-vertex-ai-sdks), we’re sharing additional updates that provide you with more direct and effective tools to build compelling AI-driven features directly into your mobile and web apps.

You can now use the [**Live API**](http://firebase.google.com/docs/vertex-ai/live-api) for Gemini models to enable more conversational interactions in your apps. These APIs enable streaming audio or text input to the model and receiving streaming audio and text responses, letting you build real-time voice interactions. Firebase manages the underlying technical complexities of this two-way communication, freeing you to focus on crafting intuitive user experiences for your app.

We have also added support for [**React Native**](https://rnfirebase.io/vertexai/usage), so you can securely and directly incorporate Gemini APIs into your React Native applications, broadening the reach of AI-powered innovation to even more users and devices.

Lastly, to speed up your ideation and testing processes, you can now generate Firebase SDK code snippets within [**Vertex AI Studio**](https://console.cloud.google.com/vertex-ai/studio/). Now, while you’re experimenting or refining your prompts in Vertex AI Studio, you can instantly get the necessary setup and initialization code for your target platform, including Android, Swift, Web, and Flutter.

### Data Connect is now generally available!

[**Data Connect**](https://firebase.google.com/docs/data-connect) is a backend-as-a-service powered by a Cloud SQL Postgres database that’s high performance, scalable, and secure. Provide your app’s data model through a GraphQL-based schema, then define how to access and update data. Data Connect does the rest for you, creating secure endpoints and typesafe SDKs for you to use in your client code.

Data Connect is now generally available, including new features to help your app development:

- Gemini in Firebase to automatically generate schemas in the Firebase console
- Additional query and mutation features: [**aggregate fields**](https://firebase.google.com/docs/data-connect/schemas-queries-mutations#aggregation_queries) and [**atomic data modifications**](https://firebase.google.com/docs/data-connect/schemas-queries-mutations#perform-updates)

## Show Me the Code: TypeScript & Web SDK Setup

Here is the production baseline pattern we use at CodingCat.dev when wiring What's new in Firebase at Cloud Next 2025 into a modern TypeScript web application:

```
# Firebase Data Connect Schema & Type-Safe Web Query
type Project @table {
  id: UUID! @default(expr: "uuidV4()")
  title: String!
  ownerUid: String! @default(expr: "auth.uid")
  createdAt: Timestamp! @default(expr: "request.time")
}
query ListUserProjects @auth(level: USER) {
  projects(where: { ownerUid: { eq_expr: "auth.uid" } }, orderBy: [{ createdAt: DESC }]) {
    id
    title
    createdAt
  }
}
```

## Production Web Architecture & Security Checklist

Whether we are deploying on [**Firebase App Hosting**](https://firebase.google.com/docs/app-hosting), Cloudflare Workers, or Vercel, shipping AI features to production requires defense-in-depth across three layers:

- **Enforce Firebase App Check & Attestation: ** Protect your web endpoints, Cloud Functions, Data Connect GraphQL resolvers, and Firebase AI Logic calls against unauthorized replay or billing abuse using [**Firebase App Check with reCAPTCHA Enterprise**](https://firebase.google.com/docs/app-check).
- **Validate Locally with the Firebase Emulator Suite: ** Run deterministic integration tests against local Firestore, Auth, Functions, and Data Connect PostgreSQL emulators before promoting schema or rule changes to production.
- **Keep Server & Client Boundaries Type-Safe: ** Use the modular Firebase Web SDK and generated TypeScript bindings so SSR frameworks like Next.js, Astro, SvelteKit, and Angular serialize state cleanly without hydration flickers.
